For Your Final Exam

The blog assignment is: Write a post about a news story. In the first paragraph, say what happened in the news story. In the second paragraph, say what the author's opinion is AND what your opinion is. Include a link to the article.

I chose to read the article http://news.yahoo.com/man-shot-dead-over-texting-dispute-florida-theater-010200912.html .
This article talks story in Florida. two men were at a movie theater.
One man shot the other man with a gun.
The man died his wife was hurt. The man shot the man because he was sending a text message to his daughter.
His daughter 3 years old.
The movie doesn't start yet. The man was a police officer.

I chose this article because guns are big issue in America. Many people disagree with gun laws in the United States, so it's controversial.
In some states, people can have a gun with them when they are in pubic places, like stores or movie theaters.
In Florida, if two people get in a fight, one person use gun to defend themselves, according to the law. However, the person with the gun has to be in danger.
Other articles said that maybe the law wouldn't work in this situation.

Blog Post 3 Example

I read an article from CNN by a farmer named Bo Stone. In the article, he talks about what he likes about being a farmer. He says that he wants to provide people with healthy, high-quality food to eat. He also likes being a part of the lives of the people who live around him, and he feels happy because his farm belongs to his family. However, he says, some people criticize him because of the size of his farm. He has a large farm (2300 acres, or about 2300 American football fields in size.) Many Americans, he says, think that large farms aren't good, that they are all owned by large companies and do not support families. He thinks that most farms are very similar, and it shouldn't matter how much land a farmer has.

I mostly agree with Mr. Stone. If the owners of a larger farm care about growing high quality plants and animals, it is a good farm! However, I mistrust the definition of "big farm" a little. Mr. Stone says that almost all of the farms in America are owned by families. However, the farms that are owned by corporations are very, very big, I think. Perhaps there aren't many of them, but if they are huge, then they might have a bigger influence. From what I have heard, these huge farms often treat animals badly, use scary techniques, and care more about earning money than making healthy food. So, I think that there are big farms that are bad. Still, I agree with Mr. Stone's main point, which is that a good farm can be big or small. People shouldn't necessarily assume that a larger farm like Mr. Stone's is not good.

Blog Post 2 example (a little long!)

For this post I chose an article I found here. titled "Man, 92, carded buying booze". In America, you need to be 21 in order to buy alcohol. ("Booze" is slang for "alcohol".) Often, when we buy alcohol, a salesclerk checks our ID card to see our age. This is is called "carding" someone. This article says that a salesclerk carded a 92-year old man! It was supposed to be a joke. The man said that he felt embarrassed, however. He said that he was leaving, and he insulted the store.

I chose this article because, to me, it is surprising. I would find the situation funny because a 92-year-old man is obviously old enough to buy alcohol! He doesn't look 21! In fact, when this happens to my mother or me, we feel flattered. I didn't realize the older man would feel hurt. Apparently, he didn't want to make other customers wait, and he felt insulted for his age. I should be careful when I laugh at things, I guess!

Assignment 1: Example Post 2 (Version A: 50+ words)

Heidi Klum's Halloween Costume

Lots of people like to wear costumes for Halloween. Sometimes, celebrities dress up, too. They have lots of money, so their costumes are often very high quality. For example, I found this photo of Heidi Klum -- she made herself look very old! It's so realistic and creative! The make-up must have been difficult and expensive. I think it's my favorite celebrity costume this year!

Assignment 1: Sample Post 1 (Version B -- 75 words)

This is a picture of me that my boyfriend took. For New Years Eve, I went to Yamanaka-ko with him and some friends. While we were there, we went to a park with lots and lots of Christmas lights. There were a lot of beautiful and interesting displays, but this was my favorite. I had recently watched "My Neighbor Totoro," and I loved it. I was so excited when I saw Totoro in Christmas lights that I shouted, "TOTORO!" I just had to have a picture!
